"The John Capek Method"
~ An overview ~

The purpose of this 12 week course is to help you write a good song.

Using challenging and innovative methods, you will be given the opportunity to stretch your imagination and better understand how to avoid writing a boring song. All the participants will be given the chance to create melodies, lyrics, rhythmic patterns and compare their creations with others. Since this workshop is a smaller group than a class-sized tutorial program, you will have a stronger sense of involvement and your progress will be attended to with immediate resolve.

Lyrically, you will:

~ Learn how to tell a story rather than annunciating random words that might sound good…but have no relevant coherence to the song.

~ Stretch your imagination by making a song more visual and test you skills with "Cold lyric writing".

~ Better understand lyrical and song structure and the art of rhyme.

~ Learn to create a lyric that people can relate to.

~ Create competitively with the other participants (Who has the best lyric…and why).

Musically, you will:

~ Understand the relevance of music and emotion (What is a sad or happy melody…and how to convey it)

~ Learn about tempo and rhythmic balance between the lyric and the melody.

~ Test your melodic skills with "Cold melody writing". Compare and discuss.

~ Compose in a group setting based on a theme.

Conclusion

There are many texts and methods available. This course is different. It is "hands on". It involves learning how to "take creative risks" and deal with creative blocks. There are no rules to memorize, no theory to get bogged down in and you will be encouraged to push the envelope of your own individual potential as a songwriter, with a view to successfully getting your songs out into the world.
